Surfing and Sand: A Day at Rockaway Beach
Rockaway Beach, a vibrant stretch of oceanfront in Queens, New York, is a place where the waves meet the boardwalk, and the city's surfing culture thrives. It's a place that has captivated me, and I'm here to share my experience, offering a unique perspective on this beloved summer destination.
The Surf's Up
Rockaway is the only legal surfing beach in New York City, and it's a place where the ocean's power and beauty are on full display. I decided to take the plunge and learn to surf, an activity that has become an integral part of Rockaway's identity. The New York Surf School, with its experienced instructor, Kwame LaBassiere, was my gateway to the waves. LaBassiere, a surfing therapist, has been riding the waves here since the aftermath of 9/11, using the ocean as a sanctuary. His passion for the sport is infectious, and his steady guidance helped me catch my first wave.
The experience of standing on a surfboard, facing the vast Atlantic, is unlike anything else. It's a moment of pure freedom, where the only choice is to commit or wipe out. I felt a connection to the ocean's power, a sense of being part of something much larger than myself. It's a feeling that has been shared by Hawaiian surfing legend Duke Kahanamoku, who visited Rockaway after the 1912 Olympics, leaving his mark on the beach with his surfing prowess.
A Boardwalk Feast
After my surfing session, I was ready for some boardwalk treats. Rockaway's 5.5-mile-long boardwalk is a food lover's paradise, with concessions and restaurants offering a variety of options. Caracas ArepaBar, with its pabellón arepa and frozen sangría, is a must-visit for a taste of Venezuelan cuisine. Brothers, on the other hand, serves up organic smoothies and sandwiches, providing a lighter option for those seeking a break from heavier beach fare. Rippers, a classic boardwalk hangout, offers double smash cheeseburgers and beachy cocktails, while Tacoway Beach serves up delicious fish tacos, a popular choice for those seeking a quick bite.
Beyond the Beach
Rockaway offers more than just surfing and food. Bungalow Bar, located along Jamaica Bay, provides a sit-down dining experience with waterfront views. It's the perfect spot for a late lunch or early dinner, serving seafood and American classics. For a more polished evening, The Rockaway Hotel's rooftop offers sunset drinks and live music with the ocean as your backdrop. Connolly's Bar, a neighborhood fixture, is a great place to end the night, offering a glimpse into Rockaway's local culture.
Getting There
Reaching Rockaway Beach is an adventure in itself. A drive from Melville will take you about an hour, with the Belt Parkway providing easy access. Parking can be a challenge during the summer, but there are free lots and street parking available. Alternatively, the Long Island Rail Road and bus system offer a convenient way to avoid traffic, making it an accessible destination for all.
